Toland Law is a Boston law firm concentrating in immigration law and criminal defense. Founded by attorney Paul J. Toland, the firm represents immigrants, their families, and anyone facing criminal charges in Massachusetts, from our office at 2 Oliver Street in downtown Boston.
Most law firms treat immigration and criminal defense as separate worlds. We built our practice on the understanding that for our clients, they are not. A criminal charge can end an immigration journey. An immigration status can change every decision in a criminal case. Our attorneys work both systems every day, and that is what makes this firm different.

 

Why we do this work

This firm’s story starts with family. Paul Toland was raised by a Colombian mother and an American father, and he grew up watching how confusing and unforgiving the U.S. immigration system can be for the people moving through it. Attorney Juan C. Congote came to the law the same way: originally from Bogotá, Colombia, he watched his own family and friends struggle with the immigration system and decided to become the advocate they never had. Associate attorney Abrafi Osei-Kofi, originally from Ghana, brings the same firsthand understanding.
We are not a firm that discovered immigration law as a market opportunity. Our attorneys live the immigrant experience, speak our clients’ languages, and treat every case as if a family’s future depends on it, because it usually does.

 

What we handle

Immigration law. We help clients obtain green cards, citizenship, asylum, Temporary Protected Status, and family-based and humanitarian visas including U visas, T visas, and VAWA petitions. We defend clients in removal proceedings, argue bond and custody matters for detained immigrants, and bring federal actions when the government violates our clients’ procedural rights.
Criminal defense. We defend clients across Massachusetts against charges including OUI, drug crimes, domestic violence, theft, sex crimes, weapons charges, fraud, and homicide. Paul Toland is a former Assistant District Attorney with more than 100 trials behind him, and the firm prepares every case as if it is going to trial.
Business immigration. We assist employers and professionals with H-1B, L, O, P, R, and TN visas and employment-based green cards in the EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 categories.
Where the two meet. Our signature work is the intersection: defending non-citizens in criminal court with a strategy that protects their status, and vacating old convictions that put immigrants at risk. The firm has vacated dozens of criminal convictions, saving clients from deportation and restoring their path to legal status.
